a guide to wedding table linens: sizing tips for every style

When planning a wedding, every detail counts—especially when setting the perfect table. The right table linens can elevate your banquet tables, giving your reception a polished and sophisticated look. One key to getting the perfect aesthetic is choosing the right linen size for your banquet tables. Here’s a guide to help you understand the different sizes and how to choose the one that works best for your style and setting.

Factors to Consider When Choosing Linen Sizes

While standard sizes are a helpful guide, here are some other factors to keep in mind when selecting your linens:

  • Table Height: If your tables are taller or shorter than the average 29” height, you may need to adjust the size of your linens accordingly.

  • Design and Style: Consider whether you want a formal, floor-length drape or a more relaxed, shorter drop. For a more modern look, you can opt for a more fitted tablecloth or use table runners and overlays.

  • Overlays and Runners: To add another layer of texture or design, you can use smaller overlays or table runners in complementary colors and fabrics. These are a great way to add visual interest and break up a monochromatic color scheme.

  • Chair Setup: If you plan to have chairs with arms, be sure your linen drop is long enough to reach the chairs, as they may block part of the tablecloth from view.

Linen Care and Quality

Choosing the right linen is only part of the equation. You’ll also want to ensure you choose high-quality linens that are wrinkle-resistant, and durable enough for a wedding day. Look for linens made from premium materials like cotton, polyester, or a linen blend. Consider renting linens from a reputable vendor who can provide clean, pressed linens for your event.

Understanding Common Table Sizes

Before selecting linens, it’s essential to understand the standard sizes of banquet tables. Most weddings will use either round or rectangular tables for guests. Here are the typical dimensions:

Round Tables

6′ Round Tables

  • Often referred to as a 72″ round, this table measures 6 feet in diameter. The table height is 30 inches from the ground. To calculate the appropriate linen size, we add the 30″ height from the ground to the tabletop on one side, plus the 72″ diameter of the table, and another 30″ drop on the opposite side. This gives us a 132″ round linen, which will drape to the floor. A 6′ round typically seats 10 guests comfortably. If you have fewer than 7 or 8 guests, the table may start to feel a bit empty.

5′ + 5.5′ Round Tables

  • The 60″ round and 66″ round table have a height of 30″ from the ground to the tabletop. For these sized tables, a 120″ round linen is ideal, as it will fall to the floor. Both round tables are perfect for 8-10 guests. If you have fewer than 6 or 7 guests, the table may look somewhat sparse.

4′ Round Tables

  • Also known as a 48″ round, this table measures 4 feet in diameter and stands 30″ tall. A 108″ round linen will cover the table and drape to the floor. The 4′ round can seat 4 to 6 guests comfortably, but it's generally better suited for smaller purposes like a cake table or a sweetheart table, due to its compact size.

King Tables

6′ King Table (72″ x 48″)

  • This table is a 6-foot long king table that measures 72″ x 48″. It seats 6-8 guests comfortably. For this table, a 90” x 132” banquet linen will provide a full floor-length drop, giving it an elegant look.

8′ King Table (96″ x 48″)

  • An 8-foot long king table, measuring 96″ x 48″, seats 8-10 guests comfortably. The appropriate linen size for this table is a 90” x 156” banquet linen, which will fall to the floor.

Sweetheart Tables

60″ Half-Round Sweetheart Table

  • This half-round table (60″ in diameter) is often used as a sweetheart table for the newlyweds. To cover this table, a 120″ round linen works well, draping elegantly to the floor.

Low Cocktail Tables

36” Round Cocktail Tables

  • This table measures 36″ in diameter and has a height of 30″ from the ground to the tabletop. A 96″ round linen will hang to the floor. Typically, four guests can sit comfortably, though you might squeeze in five depending on chair size. 36″ round tables are usually used for cocktail receptions rather than dinner seating and are ideal for sweetheart tables or cake tables.

30” Round Cocktail Tables

  • At just 30″ in diameter and 30″ tall, this table requires a 90″ round linen to cover it fully.
It can comfortably seat 3 to 4 guests during a cocktail hour.

High Cocktail Tables

  • These high-top tables are 24″, 30″, 32″ and 36″ in diameter but stand 42″ high, requiring a different linen size. A 120″ round linen will cover the table and drape to the floor. For a dramatic effect or to hide table legs, consider using a 132″ round linen, especially if you plan to add a ribbon or sash around the base. High cocktail tables are often used at cocktail hours and may be paired with bar stools/chairs (usually 4) or left without. They're also great for elevating your cake into a centerpiece that stands out.

Banquet Tables

Rectangular banquet tables are often used for non-seating purposes, like the DJ booth, gift tables, or buffet lines. However, combining round and banquet tables for dinner seating has become a popular trend, adding a modern flair to the reception layout.

6′ Banquet Tables

  • Also called a 90” x 132” banquet or a 72x24”, this table measures 6 feet in length and 30 inches in width, with a height of 30″ from the ground. A 6′ banquet table can seat 6 guests (3 on each side) comfortably, or up to 8 guests with 3 on each side and 1 at each end. A 90” x 132” linen will cover the table and fall to the floor.

8′ Banquet Tables

  • Referred to as a 90” x 156”, this table measures 8 feet in length and 30 inches in width, with a height of 30″. An 8′ banquet table can seat 8 guests (4 on each side) comfortably, or up to 10 guests with 1 person at each end. A 90” x 156” linen will drape to the floor.

Choosing the right linen size for your wedding tables may seem like a small detail, but it plays a significant role in creating the perfect atmosphere for your celebration. By understanding the standard table sizes and matching them with the correct linen dimensions, you can ensure a beautifully styled reception that feels elegant and cohesive. Whether you're working with round tables, banquet tables, or more unique options like king or sweetheart tables, the right linen can transform your space and set the tone for your entire event. Don’t hesitate to ask your linen provider for advice if you're unsure—after all, this is your special day, and every detail should be just right!
